Knowledge to practice
For nearly two decades, the Neuromedicine Pain Division faculty has taught about chronic pain and its treatments via professional education programs, clinical research training fellowships, and graduate medical seminars in New York and around the world. Over 20 international professional societies have featured presentations and courses from the group on nociceptive neurobiology, clinical diagnosis, and assessments of analgesic clinical trial evidence.
Dr. Markman routinely lectures at academic centers, in recurring CME programs for the region and via broadcast. The faculty also provide premiere training in clinical research through its fellowship programs which has fostered a generation of investigators publishing original clinical research. Finally, the seminar “Pain: the Medicine, Culture, and Politics of Suffering” explores the biopsychosocial foundation of contemporary pain treatment. The course is offered through the University of Rochester School of Medicine as part of its undergraduate curriculum.
Educational Opportunities
Professional Education Programs
CME-accredited presentations regularly focus on the neurological underpinnings of chronic pain, examination of the evidence base for medical and interventional treatment approaches, and application of biopsychosocial principles in clinical practice.
Clinical Research Training Fellowships
The program offers several training opportunities annually that provide undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral level researchers with hands-on exposure to the design, conduct, and interpretation of analgesic clinical research.
Graduate Medical Seminars
These seminars examine the biology, culture, politics, and psychology of physical suffering. By way of its exploration of cultural milieu and diverse illness experiences this seminar offers a unique introduction to the modern approach to the clinical assessment and management of pain. Future clinicians gain insights about the myths, misunderstandings, stereotypes, and stigma that hinder better care of patients suffering with pain.
